Este projeto que está documentado neste relatório foi elaborado no âmbito da unidade
curricular Tese/Dissertação/Estágio (TMDEI), do curso de mestrado em engenharia informática,
da área de especialização Sistemas Gráficos e Multimédia, do Instituto Superior de Engenharia
do Porto.
Atualmente, a comunidade com deficiência auditiva enfrenta enormes dificuldades para
estabelecer um tipo de comunicação direta entre pessoas ou de obter informação. Com o
avanço da tecnologia tem surgido novos métodos para facilitar o dia-a-dia destas pessoas, um
caso concreto é o Virtual Sign. Contudo esta tecnologia necessita de ser implementada nas mais
diferentes áreas.
O objetivo principal deste projeto é facilitar a comunicação com a comunidade surda em
ambientes académicos. Para isso procedeu-se ao desenvolvimento de uma aplicação inclusiva,
a ser implementada na papelaria do ISEP, na qual seja possível efetuar traduções bidirecionais
de texto para língua gestual e vice-versa.
A criação desta aplicação usa a tecnologia Virtual Sign que consiste em um sistema de tradução
bidirecional, que utiliza uma câmera para a captação de movimentos e o respetivo ecrã para
apresentar de forma clara a respetiva informação. Existe ainda a funcionalidade da integração
da ferramenta em sites ou aplicações para traduções sem a necessidade de câmera. A mesma
servirá para uma melhor integração da comunidade de com deficiência auditiva.
O projeto aqui desenvolvido partiu da sugestão da Professora Paula Escudeiro e em cooperação
com a U&D GILT/ISEP.
Sumariamente este projeto tem como resultado desenvolvimento de uma aplicação para a
papelaria do ISEP que permita traduções bidirecionais entre textos e língua gestual. Este utiliza
a tecnologia Virtual Sign para reconhecimento da língua gestual. A aplicação visa melhorar a
integração da comunidade de deficientes auditivos.
This project, documented in this report, was developed within the scope of the Thesis/Dissertation/Internship (TMDEI) course of the Master's program in Computer Engineering, specializing in Graphics and Multimedia Systems, at the Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP). Currently, the hearing-impaired community faces significant challenges in establishing direct communication between people or obtaining information. With the advancement of technology, new methods have emerged to facilitate the daily lives of these individuals, one concrete example being Virtual Sign. However, this technology needs to be implemented in various areas. The main objective of this project is to facilitate communication with the deaf community in academic environments. To achieve this, an inclusive application was developed to be implemented in the ISEP stationery store, allowing for bidirectional translation between text and sign language. This application utilizes Virtual Sign technology, which consists of a bidirectional translation system using a camera to capture movements and a corresponding screen to display the information clearly. There is also the functionality of integrating the tool into websites or applications for translations without the need for a camera, aiming for better integration of the hearing-impaired community. The project was initiated based on a suggestion from Professor Paula Escudeiro and in collaboration with U&D GILT/ISEP. In summary, this project resulted in the development of an application for the ISEP stationery store that enables bidirectional translations between text and sign language. It utilizes Virtual Sign technology for sign language recognition and aims to improve the integration of the hearing-impaired community.
