Abstract(s)
Mineral resources are part of our daily lives, and essential raw materials are crucial to the functioning and integrity of a wide range of industrial ecosystems. By studying the behaviour and interaction of several factors, it is possible to anticipate events that may affect the mining industry, elaborating strategies capable of predicting the opportunities or threats created by them. The main objective of this work is to carry out a prospective analysis of the mining industry in Portugal and observe its main challenges. First, information about the mining industry and the country’s mineral resources was collected and analysed, performing then a characterisation that seeks to explain the behaviour of the sector over the years. In an initial approach, a reflection was carried out on issues related to the problem of critical raw materials, the use of mineral resources and the influence of the European Green Deal in the mining industry. Subsequently, the extractive industry is approached, how it is legally governed, the nature of the industry and how it is divided by sectors from a perspective of the final product of specialisation (DGEG). Later, statistical analysis of the data will be carried out through a statistical characterisation of the sectors and their interpretation, accompanied by a principal components analysis, through the application of the XLSTAT software to evaluate the independence and/or correlation between the studied variables. Finally, a SWOT analysis is implemented, followed by a summary of the study’s most essential and conclusive points.
