O Dark Tourism representa uma extensão do turismo cultural, uma vez que surgiu a necessidade de inovar essa tipologia, por se observar uma diminuição na procura. Essa alteração verificou-se ao nível da experiência turística, ou seja, procurou-se através da experiência, proporcionar momentos únicos ao nível cultural, para que voltasse a ser opção para um maior número de turistas.
Este turismo classifica-se pela procura de locais onde outrora ocorreram catástrofes, sofrimento e morte, de modo a satisfazer a curiosidade de quem sobreviveu. São considerados locais de Dark Tourism os campos de concentração, estabelecimentos prisionais inativos, casas de serial killers, cemitérios, e todos os restantes locais que se encaixem nos padrões de morte, tragédia e sofrimento.
Em Portugal existem alguns locais associados à prática de Dark Tourism, embora este ainda não esteja suficientemente explorado. Foi definido como objetivo principal desta investigação a avaliação da potencialidade do Dark Tourism como temática em si mesma, aplicada ao destino Porto. Em resultado deste objetivo principal, são apresentados três objetivos parciais, aos quais se associam as hipóteses de investigação: Comprovar, através deste estudo, a existência de um nicho de mercado, no Porto, associado ao Dark Tourism; Perceber em que medida a cidade do Porto dispõe de recursos turísticos e procura turística, capazes de desenvolver uma experiência turística no âmbito do Dark Tourism; Sensibilizar as entidades gestoras do Destino Porto (DMO’s) para a oportunidade deste mercado. Foram aplicados 178 questionários a turistas/visitantes na cidade do Porto. Face aos resultados obtidos podemos concluir que foi possível confirmar algumas hipóteses, variáveis e domínios propostos.
Dark Tourism represents an extension of cultural tourism, since it was necessary to innovate this typology because it was having some breaks in demand. This change was verified in the level of the tourist experience, that is, it was tried through the experience, to provide unique moments in the cultural level, so that it returned to be the option for a greater number of tourists. This tourism is classified by the search of places where once catastrophes, suffering and death occurred, in order to satisfy the curiosity of those who survived. Dark Tourism sites include concentration camps, inactive prisons, serial killers, cemeteries, and all other venues that meet the standards of death, tragedy and suffering. In Portugal there are some sites associated with the practice of Dark Tourism, although this is not yet sufficiently explored. It was defined as the main objective of this investigation the evaluation of the potential of Dark Tourism as a theme in itself, applied to the destination of Porto. As a result of this main objective, three partial objectives are presented, to which the research hypotheses are associated: To prove, through this study, the existence of a market niche in Porto associated to Dark Tourism; To understand to what extent the city of Porto has tourism resources and tourism demand, able to develop a tourism experience within the Dark Tourism offer; To sensitize the Destination Management Organizations (DMO's) in Porto to the opportunity of this market. 178 questionnaires were applied to tourists/visitors in the city of Porto.
