- nDimNoC: Real-Time D-dimensional NoCPublication . Ribot, Yilian; Nelissen, Geoffrey; Tovar, EduardoThe growing demand of powerful embedded systems to perform advanced functionalities led to a large increase in the number of computation nodes integrated in Systems-on-chip (SoC). In this context, network-on-chips (NoCs) emerged as a new standard communication infrastructure for multi-processor SoCs (MPSoCs). In this work, we present nDimNoC, a new D-dimensional NoC that provides real-time guarantees for systems implemented upon MPSoCs. Specifically, (1) we propose a new router architecture and a new deflection-based routing policy that use the properties of circulant topologies to ensure bounded worst-case communication delays, and (2) we develop a generic worst-case communication time (WCCT) analysis for packets transmitted over nDimNoC. In our experiments, we show that the WCCT of packets decreases when we increase the dimensionality of the NoC using nDimNoC 19s topolgy and routing policy. By implementing nDimNoC in Verilog and synthesizing it for an FPGA platform, we show that a 3D-nDimNoC requires "485-times less silicon than routers that use virtual channels (VC). We computed the maximum operating frequency of a 3D-nDimNoC with Xilinx Vivado. Increasing the number dimensions in the NoC improves WCCT at the cost of a more complex routing logic that may result in a reduced operating clock frequency.
- Promoting foundation reading skills with at-risk studentsPublication . Sucena, Ana; Silva, Ana Filipa; Marques, CátiaThis paper presents an early reading intervention program, the PPCL (Programa de Promoção das Competências Leitoras—Promoting Reading Skills Program). PPCL focuses on the promotion of reading foundation abilities—letter-sound, phonemic awareness, decoding, and spelling—with at-risk first graders. This study assessed the impact of PPCL on the reading foundation abilities with 311 first graders (173 boys and 138 girls), divided between intervention and comparative group (respectively, 206 and 105 first graders). Results were analyzed with an inter- (intervention and comparative group) and intra- (pre-and post-test) group design. A mixed two-way Manova indicated the presence of statistically significant differences between the two assessment moments, with the intervention group presenting higher values than the comparative group in all abilities at the post-test and also above the cutoff score in all variables, which indicates that at-risk students eventually concluded the school year with satisfactory levels of reading skills. On the other hand, the comparative group scored below the cutoff score in all variables. The magnitude of the effect on the intervention group was higher than the one observed in the comparative group. Reading promotion with PPCL significantly improved at-risk students reading skills. In future studies, the authors intend to follow up on reading and writing participants’ skills.
- The competitiveness of wine companies of the new and old worlds at the international wine marketPublication . Perechnev, Andrei; Silva, Armando Mendes Jorge Nogueira daThe wine segment of alcohol production is one of the most popular in the International market. Every year new vineyards are planted new wineries are opened. Europe as a representative of the Old World as nobody else is famous for its wine traditions. Nevertheless, going by the latest trends in the world of wine the companies of the New World noticeably pressed their European rivals thus granting a common consumer a larger choice of wine production. The adequate assessment of an enterprise’s competitiveness may have a crucial role in decision-making what in due course entails an enterprise's further efficient performance and desired financial outcomes. The purpose of this study is to present the possible ways for comparative analysis of the wine companies of the New and Old Worlds. Besides, based on the survey and correlation matrix method we could individualize the most important factors which were prevailing for consumers making a choice in wine. That, in turn, helped us to forecast consumers’ choice in the next a few forms which we illustrated graphically and textually. The results obtained by a such econometric model can also be instrumental in companies’ competitiveness evaluation.
