- Recommendation of Workplaces in a Coworking Building: A Cyber-Physical Approach Supported by a Context-Aware Multi-Agent SystemPublication . Gomes, Luis; Almeida, Carlos; Vale, ZitaRecommender systems are able to suggest the most suitable items to a given user, taking into account the user’s and item`s data. Currently, these systems are offered almost everywhere in the online world, such as in e-commerce websites, newsletters, or video platforms. To improve recommendations, the user’s context should be considered to provide more accurate algorithms able to achieve higher payoffs. In this paper, we propose a pre-filtering recommendation system that considers the context of a coworking building and suggests the best workplaces to a user. A cyber-physical context-aware multi-agent system is used to monitor the building and feed the pre-filtering process using fuzzy logic. Recommendations are made by a multi-armed bandit algorithm, using ϵ -greedy and upper confidence bound methods. The paper presents the main results of simulations for one, two, three, and five years to illustrate the use of the proposed system
- Creating emotions through digital media art: building empathy in immersive environmentsPublication . Gomes, Paulo Veloso; Sá, Vítor J.; Marques, António; Donga, João; Correia, António; Loureiro, Javier PereiraArt has a power different from all other human actions; it can produce a variety of human emotions like nothing else. The main purpose of this chapter is to study the relation between media arts and emotions. Virtual environments are increasingly being used by artists; the use of immersive environments allows the media art artist to go further than express himself, allows that through contemplation and interaction the participant also becomes part of the artistic artefact. Immersive environments can induce emotional changes capable of generating states of empathy. Considering an immersive environment as a socio-technical system, where human and non-human elements interact, establishing strong relationships, the authors used actor-network theory as an approach to design an immersive artifact of digital media art. The use of neurofeedback mechanisms during the participant's exposure to immersive environments opens doors to new types of interaction, allowing to explore emotional states to generate empathy.

- Iodine levels in different regions of the human brainPublication . Pinto, Edgar; Ramos, Patrícia; Vital, Cristiana; Santos, Agostinho; Almeida, AgostinhoIodine is a key component of the thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), which are crucial for proper growth and development of the human body. In particular, a great body of literature has been published on the link between thyroid hormones and brain development and functioning. However, there is a lack of knowledge on the iodine levels in the human brain. The aim of this work was to determine the brain iodine levels and to contribute to the establishment of “reference” levels for iodine in the different anatomical and functional regions of normal (i.e., subjects without neurological or psychiatric diseases) human brain.

This report describes this seven-step process. In spite of many challenges, this project constitutes an example of advocacy in physiotherapy for the promotion of better healthcare for older adults.
- Trace element imbalances in patients undergoing chronic hemodialysis therapy - Report of an observational study in a cohort of Portuguese patientsPublication . Almeida, A.; Gajewska, K.; Duro, M.; Costa, F.; Pinto, EdgarPatients with end-stage renal disease undergoing hemodialysis therapy are at risk of developing deficiencies of essential trace elements and/or overload of toxic trace elements, both of which may significantly affect their clinical status of. Those imbalances may result from the disease itself but also from the quality of the therapeutic process, namely the hemodialysis process, which has greatly evolved in the last decades. Thus, old observations that have been assumed as very well-proven have been recently questioned. In this case-control study we evaluate the current trace elements status in a group of Portuguese patients under hemodialysis therapy.

- A carreira em recursos humanos: perspetiva de diplomados e estudantesPublication . Ferreira, Catarina Libório Baio; Meirinhos, Viviana AndradeThe overall objective of this dissertation is “Exploring the Human Resources career” and for its operationalization 4 more specific objectives were defined, namely (1) to characterize the configurations of work within the scope of HR careers, (2) to characterize the development options within the scope of HR careers, (3) to characterize career transitions within the scope of HR careers and (4) to characterize the perception of HR professionals about their career. The methodology used was qualitative and the technique for collecting information was the questionnaire survey with open questions, operationalized through 2 different/ distinct instruments for 2 different samples: one for HR graduates - already in professional practice - and another for HR students/future professionals. The sample included 354 participants, resulting in 350 valid surveys. The results obtained suggest that most HR graduates develop their careers in the HR area (dispersed across a variety of sectors), and in terms of functional activity, the dimension of HR acquisition (recruitment, selection and onboarding) is the most frequent. To progress in their careers, they invest in training essentially in the area of HR and management (in master's degrees) and in psychology and in the area of HR (in non-academic courses). Career progression is associated with professional transitions, both at the type of activity and at the hierarchical level. They revealed that the relationship with people is what they most appreciate in their career, with recognition and trust associated with the most positive moments of their careers. On the whole, the career is characterized with many more positive factors (n=225) than negative factors (n=32). The perception of their employment opportunities and potential is also considered high.
