- Processos de internacionalização de empresas portuguesas e chinesas: estudo de casoPublication . Wei, Xia Wei; Pereira, Raquel Susana da Costahe phenomenon of globalization has brought new challenges and opportunities to Portuguese and Chinese companies, which are reflected in the consideration of their internationalization. Today, small and medium enterprises (SMEs), already represent over 99% of the total number of companies in Portugal and 98.5% in China, and they play an important role in ensuring the sustainable and healthy development of the national economy, promoting technological innovation and increasing employment opportunities, as well as in maintaining social stability. On the other hand, with China's entry into the World Trade Organization (WTO) in 2001, the country has been encouraging its companies to invest abroad in order to continue their development. Thus, the internationalization process is crucial for the vast majority of Portuguese and Chinese companies. To better understand the internationalization process, the paper aims to study the internationalization strategy of two Portuguese companies and two Chinese companies, with the purpose of knowing why and how their internationalization process took place, what their objectives and strategies are, and to confront theoretical models with business practice, using a qualitative methodology based on case studies. According to the results obtained it is possible to conclude that the theories that best explain the internationalization process of the companies under study are the Uppsala Model and the Born global theory. Highlighting here the desire for growth and market expansion as the main motivations of the companies. While building subsidiaries, exporting, Turnkey Project, joint venture and e-commerce are the main entry strategies and modes adapted by the companies. As for market size and growth, psychic distance and holding unique products, these constitute the main market selection criteria used by companies in their internationalization process.
