- Smart automation in copacking and reworking: Improving customer operations in logisticsPublication . PINHO, CARLOTA TAVARES DE; Pereira, Maria Teresa RibeiroThis thesis focuses on the analysis and improvement of Co-packing and Reworking operations within a logistics environment, with the aim of enhancing both administrative and operational efficiency. Although traditionally manual and labour-intensive, these processes face increasing pressure for responsiveness and precision due to growing demand and complex supply chain dynamics. The study was conducted within Luís Simões Logística Integrada S.A. and adopts an integrated approach combining process modelling tools, technological diagnosis, and physical layout redesign. By using Value Stream Mapping (VSM) and Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) it was possible to analyse the current state of Co-packing operations, identify bottlenecks, inefficiencies, and repetitive tasks. BPMN offered detailed insights into administrative workflows and decision-making logic, while VSM revealed operational flow and resource allocation on the shop floor. The thesis also evaluates the potential implementation of the Infor M3 ERP system, based on a Gap Analysis of the current technological infrastructure, and proposes a warehouse redesign through the construction of a mezzanine to better structure the Co-packing area. The results highlight the importance of combining digital transformation strategies with process standardization and optimization. Although the ERP implementation was not approved, the proposals presented demonstrate a clear roadmap for improving process traceability, reducing cycle times, and enabling scalability. The study concludes that data-driven decision-making, supported by the right tools and aligned with operational reality, is key to building more efficient, flexible, and resilient logistics systems.
