- Estrutura de propriedade e desempenho: uma análise aplicada ao setor bancário portuguêsPublication . Fernandes, Eliete Borges; Mota, Carlos Filipe Magalhães Bastos daThis dissertation is part of the research on bank ownership structure and its impact on bank performance. Its main objective is to analyze the effect of different types of shareholders on the profitability of banks operating in the Portuguese market. The analysis is based on a sample of half-yearly data of the eleven major banking entities, for the period from 2008 to 2021. The methodology used consisted in the estimation of multiple linear regression models using Panel Least Squares and Fixed Effects estimators, having as dependent variables the profitability indicators ROA and ROE. The results obtained indicate that the effect of ownership structure on banking performance is differentiated, although the evidence by type of ownership is mixed. With empirical evidence the positive relationship between foreign ownership of banks and profitability stands out. The variable on public ownership shows a significant positive relationship with ROA, and negative with ROE. Domestic private banks make a negative contribution to industry performance, while mutual banks make a positive contribution. The evidence also shows that banks with concentrated capital tend to have a positive impact on profitability. Also, the results allowed us to verify the negative influence of the crisis on bank profitability, and the unequal impact compared to the period of financial stability.
