- Conceiving modern engineers within the framework of the sustainability action plan (PASUS) of ISEP: sustainability matters!Publication . Caetano, Nídia Sá; Meira Castro, Ana C.; Castanheira, Luís; Cardoso, Marilio; Silva, António; Rocha, JoãoEngineering education practices have evolved not only due to the natural changes in the contents of the curricula and skills but also, and more recently, due to the requirements imposed by the Bologna revision process. In addition, industry is becoming more demanding, as society is becoming more and more aware of the global needs and consequences of industrial practices. Under this scope, higher education needs not only to follow but also to lead these trends. Therefore, the School of Engineering of the Polytechnic Institute of Porto (ISEP), a Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) training partner in Portugal, prepared and presented its Sustainability Action Plan (PASUS), with the main objective of creating a new kind of engineers, with Sustainable Development at the core of their graduation and MsC degrees. In this paper, the main strategies and activities of the referred plan along with the strategic approach, which guided its development and implementation, will be presented in detail. Additionally, a reflection about the above mentioned bridge between concept and application will be established and justified, in the framework of the action plan. Although in most of the situations, there was no prior discussion or specific request, many of the graduation and post-graduation programmes offered by ISEP already include courses that attend to PASUS philosophy. As a consequence, the number of Master thesis, Graduation projects and R&D projects that address sustainability problems has grown substantially, a proof that for ISEP community, sustainability really matters!
- Dispachability improvement of wind generation by the virtual power producersPublication . Morais, H.; Cardoso, Marilio; Saleiro, N.; Vale, Zita; Castanheira, Luís; Praça, IsabelNowadays, there is a growing environmental concern about were the energy that we use comes from, bringing the att ention on renewable energies. However, the use and trade of renewable e nergies in the market seem to be complicated because of the lack of guara ntees of generation, mainly in the wind farms. The lack of guarantees is usually addressed by using a reserve generation. The aggregation of DG p lants gives place to a new concept: the Virtual Power Producer (VPP). VPPs can reinforce the importance of wind generation technologies, making them valuable in electricity markets. This paper presents some resul ts obtained with a simulation tool (ViProd) developed to support VPPs in the analysis of their operation and management methods and of their strat egies effects.
- Distributed generation producers' reserve managementPublication . Vale, Zita; Morais, H.; Cardoso, Marilio; Ramos, Carlos; Khodr, H. M.Sustainable development concerns are being addressed with increasing attention, in general, and in the scope of power industry, in particular. The use of distributed generation (DG), mainly based on renewable sources, has been seen as an interesting approach to this problem. However, the increasing of DG in power systems raises some complex technical and economic issues. This paper presents ViProd, a simulation tool that allows modeling and simulating DG operation and participation in electricity markets. This paper mainly focuses on the operation of Virtual Power Producers (VPP) which are producers’ aggregations, being these producers mainly of DG type. The paper presents several reserve management strategies implemented in the scope of ViProd and the results of a case study, based on real data.
- Importance of technologies characteristics for VPPsPublication . Morais, H.; Cardoso, Marilio; Saleiro, N.; Castanheira, Luís; Vale, Zita; Praça, IsabelThe large increase of renewable energy sources and Distributed Generation (DG) of electricity gives place to the Virtual Power Producer (VPP) concept. VPPs can reinforce the importance of these generation technologies making them valuable in electricity markets. One of the most important tasks of a VPP is the conjugation of technologies to obtain a consistent set of associated producers and allow them to operate in the electric market. This paper presents some characteristics regarding already existent technologies and relevant aspects for producers and for VPP.
- A multi-agent system for the support of producer coalition formation in electricity marketsPublication . Praça, Isabel; Andrade, André; Morais, H.; Cardoso, Marilio; Ramos, Carlos; Vale, ZitaAll over the world Distributed Generation is seen as a valuable help to get cleaner and more efficient electricity. To get negotiation power and advantages of scale economy, distributed producers can be aggregated giving place to a new concept: the Virtual Power Producer. Virtual Power Producers are multitechnology and multi-site heterogeneous entities. Virtual Power Producers should adopt organization and management methodologies so that they can make Distributed Generation a really profitable activity, able to participate in the market. In this paper we address the development of a multi-agent market simulator – MASCEM – able to study alternative coalitions of distributed producers in order to identify promising Virtual Power Producers in an electricity market.

Cardoso, Marilio; Castanheira, Luís; Meira Castro, Ana C.; Caetano, Nídia Sá; Silva, AntónioPorto Polytechnical Engineering School (ISEP), a Global Reporting Initiative training partner in Portugal, has just presented its Sustainable Development Action Plan (PASUS), which main objective is the formation of a new kind of engineers, with a Sustainable Development (SD) philosophy in the core of their academic curricula courses.
- Virtual power producers integration into MASCEMPublication . Praça, Isabel; Morais, H.; Cardoso, Marilio; Ramos, Carlos; Vale, ZitaAll over the world Distributed Generation is seen as a valuable help to get cleaner and more efficient electricity. Under this context distributed generators, owned by different decentralized players can provide a significant amount of the electricity generation. To get negotiation power and advantages of scale economy, these players can be aggregated giving place to a new concept: the Virtual Power Producer. Virtual Power Producers are multi-technology and multi-site heterogeneous entities. Virtual Power Producers should adopt organization and management methodologies so that they can make Distributed Generation a really profitable activity, able to participate in the market. In this paper we address the integration of Virtual Power Producers into an electricity market simulator –MASCEM – as a coalition of distributed producers.
- Virtual power producers market strategiesPublication . Morais, H.; Cardoso, Marilio; Khodr, H. M.; Praça, Isabel; Vale, ZitaThis paper presents MASCEM - a multi-agent based electricity market simulator. MASCEM uses game theory, machine learning techniques, scenario analysis and optimisation techniques to model market agents and to provide them with decision-support. This paper mainly focus on the MASCEM ability to provide the means to model and simulate Virtual Power Producers (VPP). VPPs are represented as a coalition of agents, with specific characteristics and goals. The paper detail some of the most important aspects considered in VPP formation and in the aggregation of new producers and includes a case study.
- VPPs information needs for effective operation in competitive electricity marketsPublication .
