Abstract(s)
A amostra
Entrepreneurship is an international phenomenon increasingly studied, being often understood as a bet for job creation and therefore conducive to economic growth. This research aims to address the fundamental problems related to gender and entrepreneurship in the Portuguese society. This is a current topic and few empirical studies that address this issue are known. It is intended to clarify the concept of entrepreneur, social and behavioural differences between female and male genders as entrepreneurs and identify Portuguese women entrepreneurs. Thus, an empirical analysis of the problem has been made based on data from the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) in Portugal for the years 2007 to 2012. An option has been made for a qualitative methodology, of multiple case study, being the data collection instrument the semi-structured interview. Subsequently I proceeded to the analysis of the content of the interviews, gathering data from various sources and comparing them with the theoretical data collected. The sample of this study involved eight participants – Portuguese women entrepreneurs in different branches of business. In relation to the results obtained, it was found that most respondents have family entrepreneurs, being the father figure singled out as the driver of entrepreneurial activity. It was found that the desire for personal fulfilment and independence are the main motivating factors to work on their own. As a conclusion, and based on the results obtained, we can still say that no entrepreneur felt or feels any discrimination or gender inequality being an entrepreneur woman in Portugal.
