Abstract(s)
In recent decades, the process of globalisation has intensified regional economic disparities, posing a serious threat to economic progress, social cohesion and political stability. Market processes and policies, previously seen as engines of prosperity and opportunity, are no longer proving effective enough to meet these challenges. In this context, regional development is strongly driven by logistical efficiency, which facilitates the flow of goods, reduces operating costs and promotes the competitiveness of local companies, contributing to the sustainable economic growth of communities. The general aim of this study is to understand the relationship between regional development and logistics, a gap identified in the literature, with the main source of data initially being the existing literature, relating the contribution of logistics to socio-economic development. Recognising the importance of regional development in the economic and social context, this study has the following specific objectives: (1) to analyse the contribution of logistics activities to economic and social development at a regional level; (2) understand the importance of logistics in regional development through a case study applied to the Tâmega e Sousa region; and (3) to propose a conceptual model that allows the interactions between logistics and regional development to be assessed, which can serve as a reference for other regions. Using a methodology based on a literature review, analysis of logistics indicators and validation with experts, the study identifies critical factors for improving logistics efficiency and competitiveness. It highlights the relevance of adequate infrastructure and a robust evaluation model to monitor logistics impact and suggests that improvements in this sector could increase the region's attractiveness, boosting economic growth and job creation.
