Abstract(s)
This research shows the importance of learning a foreign language at an early age of the child. This work focused on trying to investigate from a plurilingue approach the combined learning of the English Language and the Portuguese Sign Language, and the awareness of a group of students of the 1st Cycle of Basic Education in towards languages other than their mother tongue. In this research, it was adopted a posture of research - action, mainly based on a qualitative methodology and with less relevance on a quantitative methodology, where students through various developed activities obtained different skills in both languages. This allowed them to stimulate all their knowledge of these two languages (English Language and Portuguese Sign Language), compelling as a starting point towards their awareness and learning of some words. This plurilingue approach can assist students in the development of language, cognitive and personal skills such as: the mutual understanding, knowledge of specific characteristics of different existing languages around them, the linguistic comparison between them, their lexical understanding, and finally competence to relate the different language cultures, and above all, the respect and the appreciation of linguistic and cultural diversity. In this work different kinds of activities were used, with different levels of understanding and oral production in the process of awareness and learning of some words of the two foreign languages, and the corresponding results were then analyzed. These results were evaluated through observation grids, two questionnaire surveys and photos Observations and conclusions drawn from this analysis were that the awareness of the English Language as well as the Portuguese Sign Language, promotes the development of the children, as well as the appreciation of linguistic and cultural diversity of each child.
