  • EPS@ISEP: Mapping sustainability

    The European Project Semester (EPS) is a project-based learning framework designed to prepare engineering undergraduates for future professional challenges. During one semester, multicultural multidisciplinary teams design, develop and test solutions to real problems affecting the planet, society or individuals, considering technical, sustainability, ethical, and market requirements. The implemented learning process gives teams the autonomy to make design decisions, as long as they are based on clear sustainability and ethical criteria. The aim is for students to develop skills not only in critical thinking, problem-solving, creativity, innovation, effective communication, collaboration, and teamwork, but above all, the ability to make decisions based on ethical and sustainability principles. This study aims to demonstrate that EPS@ISEP effectively contributes to the development of sustainability-oriented engineers. To this end, it compiles evidence found at the institutional level, represented by programme documentation, and the student level, represented by team deliverables. The method involves semi-automatic mapping of sustainability keywords compiled from the documents, as well as by other researchers. The results show that both the institution and the participants are aligned and committed to the design of sustainability-driven solutions.
  • VIRIATO: Visual-Action Reinforcement Integrator for Actor-Critic with Temporal Observations

    The Visual-Action Reinforcement Integrator for Actor-Critic with Temporal Observations (VIRIATO) is a compact multi-input feature-extractor architecture designed to enable robust visual navigation of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) conducting close-range inspection of photovoltaic arrays. The target task of low-altitude flight over dynamic, visually variable surfaces without privileged information is inherently partially observable. VIRIATO augments stacked image observations with a short history of recent past actions, producing a richer latent state for the Soft Actor-Critic (SAC) agent. Training is performed with domain randomization to expose the policy to diverse lighting, backgrounds and panel layouts. In simulation, VIRIATO yields faster learning and improved sample efficiency compared to a standard image-only Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) feature extractor, achieving lower position and yaw errors and substantially better robustness under image perturbations while retaining high task completion rates. The architecture is intentionally simple and general: it improves temporal awareness without adding complex recurrence, and it could be adapted to other perception-driven robotic tasks. These results demonstrate that integrating historical action data with visual encoding, together with domain randomization, is an effective way to achieve reliable autonomous vision-based navigation.
  • Mapping ethics in EPS@ISEP robotics projects

    The European Project Semester (EPS), offered by the Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto (ISEP), is a capstone programme designed for undergraduate students in engineering, product design, and business. EPS@ISEP fosters project-based learning, promotes multicultural and interdisciplinary teamwork, and ethics- and sustainability-driven design. This study applies Natural Language Processing techniques, specifically text mining, to analyse project papers produced by EPS@ISEP teams. The proposed method aims to identify evidence of ethical concerns within EPS@ISEP projects. An innovative keyword mapping approach is introduced that first defines and refines a list of ethics-related keywords through prompt engineering. This enriched list of keywords is then used to systematically map the content of project papers. The findings indicate that the EPS@ISEP robotics project papers analysed demonstrate awareness of ethical considerations and actively incorporate them into design processes. The method presented is adaptable to various application areas, such as monitoring compliance with responsible innovation or sustainability policies.
  • A Multidimensional Scaling Classification of Robotic Sensors

    This chapter analyzes the signals captured during impacts and vibrations of a mechanical manipulator. Eighteen signals are captured and several metrics are calculated between them, such as the correlation, the mutual information and the entropy. A sensor classification scheme based on the multidimensional scaling technique is presented.

    This first of three volumes from the inaugural NODYCON, held at the University of Rome, in February of 2019, presents papers devoted to Nonlinear Dynamics of Structures, Systems and Devices.   • ICEER2019@Aveiro: Energy and environment - challenges towards circular economy

    The 6th edition of the International Conference on Energy and Environment Research, ICEER 2019, took place in the end of July 2019, at the University of Aveiro, Portugal. With most of the participants coming from academia, and a few from the professional field, ICEER series is still growing and attracting increased interest. Energy production, distribution and use are fundamental for the Sustainable Development of nations, showing a clear link between the energy and environment issues. Nevertheless, these matters are frequently dealt with separately, reflecting the way they are taught, and causing strong negative impacts, and hindering progress. With a growing trend in circular economy models applied to common goods production and commercialization, ICEER 2019 had as focus theme the challenges posed by energy and environment research in a circular economy-based model. This paper presents the main achievements and conclusions of ICEER 2019 participants, through their research in the fields of energy and environment, including a brief analysis of the current requirements of Education on Sustainable Development applied to the modern technological curricula.

    A conferencia TAEE conhecerá na sua 14ª edição um momento histórico. Não só é a primeira vez que a será organizada fora do território Espanhol, como terá lugar a verdadeiramente pioneira experiência de realizar esta conferência num formato puramente virtual no Instituto Superior de Engenharia do Porto. Esta opção representa a solução possível para um evidente problema mundial, que surgiu de forma repentina durante a preparação desta edição. Optamos por aplicar a típica abordagem de engenharia, instintivamente encarando este novo problema como uma verdadeira oportunidade, e aproveitando as limitações impostas para experimentar novas soluções para novas questões. Tentamos criar uma TAEE diferente, não melhor nem pior, mas indo buscar proveitos às tecnologias de comunicação emergentes de forma a criar e dinamizar um evento onde não estaremos fisicamente juntos, mas poderemos comunicar e conviver de forma virtual. A grande motivação da TAEE será sempre os visíveis entrosamentos, dedicação e motivação da comunidade e serão estes fatores que permitirão o sucesso nesta nova forma de estarmos e trabalharmos juntos, mas à distância.

    Focused on "Engineering Education for the future in a multicultural and smart world", the EDUCON2020 Online edition was based on a comprehensible program that included: • a pre-conference day with 9 workshops, which attracted approx. 300 remote participants; • 3 plenary sessions, including: • a unique opening interview with interveners physically located in two different time zones, with a span of 16 hours, in particular Keith Willey (interviewed), from Sydney, Australia, and Susan Zvacek (interviewer), from Denver, US. Henrique Santos, Vice President for Conferences and Workshops of the IEEE Education Society, located in Portugal, served as moderator. • a keynote by Annette Kolmos, about “Complex Problem Solving and PBL in Engineering Education”, moderated by José Carlos Quadrado. • and, a closing debate with Maria Graça Carvalho (a member of the European Parliament), Sebastião Feyo de Azevedo (Rector of Universidade Portucalense Infante D. Henrique), and João Gabriel Silva (Rector of the University of Coimbra from 2011 to 2019), who discussed about “The University and the Digital Transformation of Society”, in a debate moderated by Russ Meier, president of the IEEE Education Society. • and 44 technical sessions; 4 round tables, and 7 special sessions The technical program included 314 papers that underwent a double-blind review process with at least 3 independent reviewers. Considering a total number of 654 submissions, this results into a 50% acceptance rate. Finally, the EDUCON2020 online conference edition gathered more than 300 participants from 51 countries on 5 continents.
  • Caracterização de erros experimentais em circuitos eletrônicos no Laboratório Remoto VISIR+

    Programas de simulação e plataformas de experimentação são importantes aliados do estudante e pesquisador para unir conhecimentos teóricos e práticos. Frequentemente, durante a realização dos experimentos com circuitos elétricos e eletrônicos, os alunos cometem erros, sejam estes por falta de atenção ou por não assimilar corretamente algum conteúdo. Como forma de aprimorar esses conhecimentos e ampliar a experimentação, laboratórios remotos como Virtual Instruments Systems in Reality (VISIR) ganham espaço. Com o objetivo de construir um tutorial online para o auxílio dos estudantes, este artigo apresenta possíveis erros ao analisar experimentos com o diodo, expandindo assim trabalhos anteriores já publicados acerca desta temática, relacionada com a utilização do VISIR.
